LiveRoof® project leader, Horticulturist, Lecturer, Author
Founded in 1983, Hortech is a wholesale nursery specializing in beautiful, utilitarian labor saving turf alternatives. During the late nineties, as green roofs began to creep into the United States, Hortech began to supply sedum plugs for small green roof applications. Then, after the turn of the century, we were propelled rapidly forward in the green roof market as a supplier and consultant to Ford Motor Company for their world-record ten acre green roof.
Shortly thereafter, we were asked by a Chicago-based client to design a superior modular green roof system, from a grower’s perspective. We quickly realized that such a system must be more than just plant-friendly, so we pulled together a gifted team consisting of green roof expert Ed Snodgrass, manufacturing and marketing professionals, architects, engineers, roofers, logistics professionals, soil experts, edging experts, and a physical therapist (for ergonomic considerations). Collectively, we have developed the LiveRoof® system which we believe is the finest modular system in the marketplace.
LiveRoof® incorporates unique patent-pending Soil Elevators™ and Moisture Portals™, and effective drainage and ergonomic design to provide the look and function of a continuous membrane system with the turn-key instantly vegetated convenience of a modular system. This is exciting since mature vegetation keeps out weeds, prevents erosion and saves a great deal of money as one avoids the high maintenance cost of the typical 2 to 4 seasons for establishment.
We look forward to talking to you soon about the LiveRoof® System and hope to be part of your green roof plans.

“The modular system allows the grow-in period of the green roof to be transferred to the nursery where professional growers can establish the green roofs.”
Ed’s book Green Roof Plants is the only book on the subject written for the North American market.
